Please pay attention: We always cut from where we stand towards outside and we always take care so that our fingers are on the ruler away from the cutter.
We move the cutter along the ruler and the fabric is cut very very easily. We firstly cut the fabric on stripes and then we cut the stripes on squares, as shown on the picture.
as planned, so that we are sure that the result is satisfying. If there is something we do not like, this is the moment we can make changes. Of course we may change things also later, but then you have to use your seam ripper.
We choose a simple stitch. The foot we use is the very common one, whereas if we work on inches, we may use the 1/4" foot. In the future we will talk about various feet we use while making patchwork and quilting.
What we do now is what is called chain piecing, meaning that we sew our pieces one pair after the other as shown. In orer to have an accurate seam allowance in case, you work with centimeters, please use a measure to measure the distance from your needle and put just a tape, so that you have your seam allowance always there.
Ετοιμάζουμε τα κομμάτια μας ανά δύο, όπως θα τα ράψουμε
We prepare the squares pairing them according to our sketch
και αρχίζουμε και τα ράβουμε χωρίς να σηκώνουμε καθόλου το ποδαράκι. Τελειώνοντας το ένα βάζουμε το άλλο και στο τέλος είναι όλα ενωμένα μεταξύ τους.
and we start sewing without lifting the foot. At the end they all all connected with thread.
We cut those threads, and then we sew two pairs together as shown below according to our pattern.
We repeat so that we now have 4 stripes of 4 blocks each. Let's go iron them. Please take care and do not iron every seam to the same direction. Take a look at the picture below and you will understand the reason, while joining them.
We take two stripes and put them right sides inside, according to the pattern. If we have measured precisely, the seams should be aligned. We pin each seam (you see now why we took care while ironing, not to iron all seams towards the same direction). We sew the two stripes, then the other two and finally we sew those two pieces and we are done.
We iron once more and if everything has been well, then the result should be like this. We have just finished the our first piece of patchwork and we are ready to make the cushion on the next post.
I hope this fist lesson was clear. If, however you would like to ask me something, please do not hesitate to contact me and I will try to answer the soonest possible.
